Remembering Those in Need: Ministry to the Church and Through the Church in War-torn areas.

Seminar Description: Our Lord Jesus reminded us that near the end times there would be many cases of wars and rumors of wars. While none of us wants war, and we pray for its end, nevertheless the fact of war remains. For missions, particularly those who work internationally, war is a reality in which we often minister. While war rages, often the church steps forward to become the light of Christ amid conflict. How can support churches who work in war torn areas, and what can we learn from them to make church in peace times even more effective? How do we support churches, and work with churches to make their ministry stronger when they are working under the terrible clouds of war in their backyard?

Bio: Gord and Sue Balfour currently serve as the Canadian staff of Mission Eurasia Canada. After a career spanning senior pastoral ministry (16 years), information technology teaching and consulting (10 years) and another 14 years serving in various positions with ShareWord Global (formerly The Gideons International in Canada), Gord retired from ShareWord in 2021 and two months later joined the staff of Mission Eurasia Canada. His wife, Sue, after careers in banking, small business retail ownership and medical office administration, also transitioned to become the office administrator at ME. Together they enjoy blending their talents and energies to promote Mission Eurasia’s work.

To keep costs down, the office is housed in their home in Cambridge Ontario. Sue manages the office materials, books, and paperwork in a part time capacity while Gord, as Executive Director, carries the full-time load of promoting, building, and strategizing the future growth of the mission in Canada.

Mission Eurasia Canada exists to serve and strengthen the church, mainly across 15 countries of Eurasia and the nation of Israel[1]. We do not send missionaries, rather we work to raise resources in the west to equip evangelical church leaders and workers in the countries where we serve. Particularly we work to train and support young leadership, with instruction and resourcing, so that they can lead their churches into the future and reach their nations for Christ. Mission Eurasia was formed over 30 years ago, in part the vision of Peter Denyka Jr., who saw a need to train young leaders to move outside their churches into the common areas of life, once the Iron Curtain had fallen.

Today Mission Eurasia has ministry offices in Moldova, the United States and Canada. We work together to strengthen the evangelical churches of Eurasia, using training programs that allow young people to employ their talents in service to churches while learning principles of ministry. See our website for details on our ministry projects. (www.missioneurasia.ca).

The Balfours enjoy travel, reading, serving in their local church in Cambridge, walking and family life. They love to visit their grandchildren in Toronto, spoiling them as is required in the grandparent’s handbook.

ME works in the countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Poland, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.
